Faith CSDE Senior Programs QCE (Queensland Certificate of Education) & Subject Options

The QCE is Queensland’s Senior school-based qualification, awarded to eligible students on completion of the senior phase of learning, usually at the end of Year 12, or after having procured a total of 20 recognised credits. A QCE may not influence a student’s eligibility for future University or TAFE study but is instead how Queensland “recognises achievement where a student has demonstrated a significant amount of learning, to a set standard and in a set pattern, while meeting literacy and numeracy requirements.” For Additional information…

Faith CSDE is offering students the opportunity to graduate with an OP, however, there are alternative options for students who do not seek an OP (OP-ineligible). We will continue to focus on providing moderated subjects and support for areas of study that are or may be prerequisites for various University course, namely, Authority courses such as English and Maths A or B.

Faith is able to offer students both internal and mixed subject choices for students to obtain QCE and students in 2018 will have a number of QCAA Authority or Authority Registered subjects to choose from. This year we offered 12  subject options, which were supplemented with externally recognised courses to provide students with the skills and prerequisites for their future needs.

”Internal" signifies that a student has obtained their QCE points through Faith Christian School DE courses ONLY.

"Mixed" means that the choice of subject for a given student utilize subjects that have QCE credit value but are largely provided for by a TAFE, University or other, PREPARATORY courses that are often used as stepping stones to further study…

Even if the TAFE Course is “School Based” and our staff support the work, it is still under “mixed" as the course is owned by an run by and external agency.

Total QCAA Senior Subjects for 2018 = 11 which allows for our students to complete a QCE 20 credits internally.

If a student desired to get an Overall Position (OP) then they would have to successfully complete five Authority (A) subjects over two years. In doing so they would also receive a QCE. Getting an OP is not the only way to get an tertiary entrance ranking for university. Students exiting in 2019 will be the final cohort to exit with an OP. A new entry system will be in place for those exiting in 2020.

You can see from these two very different examples that there are options and that these options will depend on the individual needs and directions of each student. It is also important to note that Faith Christian School DE encourages the coverage of both Maths and English within the Core subjects chosen. This is due to the importance we place on each of our students covering Maths and English, even at a English Communications of Pre-Vocational Mathematics level.

SET Plans
Every Student Year 10 and above has a completed SET Plan that should tie in with their School Subject program of study and their future directions for University, TAFE, Apprenticeship or Employment. This will be an online document.

Summary
We realise that students do not require a QCE to gain an tertiary entrance ranking from the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Board (QTAC) or get into University, The  QCE is rather a statement of the completion of 20 credits of QCAA recognised courses. A student’s QCE credits can be added to following Year 12 by additional recognised study programs and courses. University units or courses, however, supersede the  QCE.

Faith Christian School encourages all students and families to keep their options open by completing the core components of Senior Maths (A or B), English Authority and moderated Science (BIology, Chemistry, Physics or Science 21), where possible and where applicable.

Faith Christian School also encourages all students to keep their options open by completing a moderating exam in their final year, as this may improve the ranking they gain for entry to university. The moderating exam that we like to recommend is the Queensland Core Skills Test (QCST)  run in mid Term 3 of Year 12.

Keeping your options open is very important. For example, a student that is able to gain a tertiary entrance rank based on their AMEB Music grades alone, would be wise to also complete a moderated subjects for Maths and English (which are or may be prerequisites for other course. This would ensure they have the option to change their mind on what degree they wish to study or which university they want to study through.
