Learning Materials and Supports

7-10 Science

We are currently writing Science units for students at a Year 7-9 level from 2021 onwards.  These units are designed to meet the requirements of the Australian Curriculum. As such, they cover four branches of Science: Biological Sciences, Physical Science, Chemical Science, Earth and Space Science.  The units are also designed to educate students on the application and historical development of Science: what the curriculum calls Science as a Human Endeavour.  Additionally, the units aim to equip students with the necessary Science Inquiry skills. They contain a number of practical experiments that can be done at home using readily available items.

There will be four modules each year: one per term, each one focussing on one of the four scientific disciplines: Biology in Term 1, Physics in term 2, Chemistry in Term 3, and Earth Science in Term 4.

The modules are presented in the form of a booklet in .pdf format.  These can be printed out and followed sequentially. They contain all instructions needed to follow the course and have spaces for students to write their answers to the exercises included in the booklets. You will find step-by-step instructions for experiments including equipment lists and guidance for students to process and analyse experimental results.

Secondary Science Investigation Tools

We provide a range of science investigation activities through our learning materials.

Key links to science investigation templates and research sites are below. [to be added]

Science Fair and Competitions

FCSDE Science & Technology Fairs

Each year we host a Science and Technology Fair as part of our Term 3 Workshops. This provides students with the opportunity to be supported and engaged in researching a question and understand how to do this in a scientifically valid way. The Science Fairs provide a safe and supportive context to inspire others and share their ideas. They are also an invaluable opportunity for students to learn to communicate to a receptive audience using written, spoken and multimodal texts.  An email comes out in Term 2 about this. You can also contact your Area Teacher about getting started on this at any time.

The DAFF Hermitage Science Competition is run in the first half of each year.  It provides structure

science investigation activities and links these to art and other research activities that helpstudents to see science affects how we eat, drink and live. Start-up equipment is mailed out to participants and there is an awards day run in about August of each year. We have had a number of students receive awards in this competition over the years. It is worth getting on to this at the start of the year as some experiments work best when there is summer heat to enable plant growth.
